The California Council for the Social Studies Annual Conference is a great opportunity to participate in sessions facilitated by classroom teachers, but not everyone gets to attend the conference or every session available. As part of our ongoing webinar series, join CCSS and educator John Schmitt as he brings his conference session to the virtual space. We all know Historical Thinking Skills—like Sourcing, Contextualizing, Corroboration, and Close Reading—but how can we make them come alive for young learners? Using Historical Thinking Skills is critical for students of any age to engage in a nuanced and critical examination of the past, giving them the tools to question and examine the problems in their community and our world. As social studies educators, we have no greater responsibility than to teach these skills, allow students to become expert questioners of their world, and then build towards truths rooted in evidence and increased empathy. This session will provide new, refreshing, and interactive ways to teach these skills, which can easily be embedded into the curriculum at any level. You will also leave with an effective assessment of these skills, which you can scaffold up or down to match your teaching level. Registration is required.
